I have to say that when it comes to the fantasy genre, it's a bit hit or miss for me. If a story is too far out there, I don't feel like I can connect. If the names are just too wonky...I make up my own names for them to make them understandable and it's a little weird. So, I'm picky over the genre when I read it.
What first caught my attention about Storm Siren was the cover....seriously people, it's gorgeous! And in person it just pops off the book. As I read the story, every detail to this cover made sense and made Nym so much more real and made me love this cover even more for the ability to see into this story.
Everything that I love about fantasy was in this book. It was realistic, the names were understandable, the setting was new and rich, and the characters had a depth to them that made you want to dive further into their lives.
Nym is a strong girl. She's had a brutal and harsh life and she lives with what she believes is a curse. When you find out more about her, you realize why it is a curse and not a blessing. For her to be able to carry on after everything proves her strength. Eogan is a man of mystery and has a very powerful ability and he has a confidence around him that makes you wonder why and keeps you wanting to find out more, just as Nym wants to find out more. Colin, he is the best friend that you love but also can get on your nerves and you want to slug. He was a lot of fun and brought many laughs throughout the story. Between the three of them, the story opens up and you are able to witness this world and the people who live in it and it makes you wonder how these three will really fit in and what roll they are wanted for.
This story hooked me. I had some personal things come up and I had to put this book down for many days...that made me sad, because I was thinking about what was going to happen next. Despite the break, I was able to jump back in a fully immerse myself back in and not feel lost.
Now, mind you...I'm not going to ruin anything, but that ending! Holy cow! That ending. Now we have to wait months to find out where that is going to lead. Safe to say, I was stunned and I wanted more immediately.
